SPECIAL EDUCATION MILLAGE
On Tuesday, August 2nd, voters in the Eastern Upper Peninsula Intermediate School District (EUPISD) service area will be asked to approve the renewal of a .2273 mill and approve an additional .7500 mill. Funds will be utilized to provide critical services, purchase equipment, improve facilities and help transport special need students in local school districts in Chippewa, Luce and Mackinac Counties. If the millage is approved, it will generate $17.56 million ($2.48 million annually) over the next 7 years.
Without the approval of this millage, local districts would be required to pay for special education services out of their general funds, resulting in fewer dollars to support programs for all students.
The requested .9773 mill includes a renewal of the .2273 four year levy, originally passed by voters in 2018. If approved, the cost to homeowners with a market value of $100,000 (taxable value of $50,000), will be $4.07 per month ($48.87 annually). For a home with a market value of $150,000 (taxable value of $75,000), the cost would be $6.11 per month ($73.30 annually).
Individuals who live in the EUPISD service area, will be 18 years of years of age or older on Election Day and are registered to vote on or before the date of the election, can vote. Absentee ballots will be available at the Clerk's Office in the city or township of residence on or after June 23. (Voters can complete the application and vote in one stop. The whole process takes less than 5 minutes.)
Have you cast your August 2 Primary Election ballot yet? Will you be able to go to the polls on Tuesday?
